The chkdsk command had been in windows for years and people remember using it in the days of DOS.It is used to check for and fix errors on the hard drive. To use it you need to open a command prompt window. In windows 7, go to start, all programs accessories; in windows 8, type command prompt on the start screen. In both cases, right-click command prompts and selects ‘Run as administrator’..

The usual way to fix disk errors is to type chkdsk C: /fwhich means check disk C: and fix (/f) any faults.

There are several command variations and you can see these by typing chkdsk/?.

Windows 8 has different command prompts to previous versions of the OS.

One new option is chkdsk C:  /scan which scans the disk for errors and stores a list of them in a system file. If any errors are found, type chkdsk  C:  /spot fix to fix the problems. Unlike previous versions, it does this with out needing to reboot...
