To use it you need to open a command prompt window. In windows 7, go to start, all programs accessories; in windows 8, type command prompt on the start screen. The usual way to fix disk errors is to type chkdsk C: /fwhich means check disk C: and fix (/f) any faults. 

There are several command variations and you can see these by typing chkdsk/?.

Windows 8 has different command prompts to previous versions of the OS.
