Where is my missing memory?

This is frustrating.

The under lying reason is very technical but, essentially, 32-bit computers are limited to a maximum of 4 GB of ‘addressable’ memory. If the computer is fitted with a graphics card that has 1 GB of its own memory, for example, then that 1 GB must also be accessed with in the addressable limit of 4 GB- effectively preventing the PC’s from addressing 1GB of its own memory.

Short of upgrading to a 64- bit edition of Windows, there isn't much u can do to be able to make use of the full 4 GB of physical memory. However, one thing to check is that windows itself isn't artificially restricting the available memory.

To do this,
Click START > Run > type msconfig > press enter.

This will launch the system configuration utility > select the boot tab > click the advanced options button.

If the maximum memory box is ticked, click to clear it. Click OK & OK again, then restart your PC and check the memory figure anew (hold down the windows key and tap the pause/Break key) to see if more is now available.

NOTE: The procedure is similar to both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
